Quilting the Great Depression
The Great Depression was an era that has created a challenge for women who wanted to quilt. Not only Money was very tight in households, but had limited reserves of the country. Women have had to use creativity and ingenuity to create beautiful quilts. Some popular quilts of today were born of the Great Depression.
The Great Depression, for those of us who were not there at the time, was an economic depression in North America, Europe and other industrialized regions of the world, which began in 1929 and lasted until 1939. It began with the collapse of agricultural prices in the decade 1920, is known for the collapse in 1929 of Wall Street. This depression was the longest and most important has ever known in the Western industrialized world.
Bankers and others lost everything early shot to death in buildings. Workers who may still be struggling to find work to feed their families. With the collapse of the economy, have found ways to Creative has small amounts of cash, while the companies had to be creative to survive in the functioning of some of the money it takes to win customers.
It is easy to see why companies selling quilt fabric, the son and the tools must find a way to create value in their products and promote Quilters continue to spend hard earned money. Fortunately for them, quilts were a necessity to be created by hand for times of severe economic constraints that limit the opportunity to buy.
Women's magazines have begun to provide similar patterns quilting free with every issue to increase its readership. After all, most household budgets could not afford to buy a magazine, not to mention several sewing patterns.
So to continue to sell magazines and promote the purchase of fabrics, many suppliers have chosen to offer free patterns that encourage purchases. Models such as the Star of Bethlehem, the wedding ring, grandmother's flower garden and even Dresden Plate are some configurations still used today actually were the result of the Great Depression.
Often women who share a magazine. That is traced quilting patterns or even a picture of a quilt photographed for the review their own models at home. The most popular magazines occasionally offer iron on quilt patterns. They were well received, as many women not only can share the cost of the magazine but could share the iron in the habits of their padding.
Therefore, offering free quilting patterns made become a common tradition of the sale is still used today.
I found it particularly interesting that this has been used by women market and sell women's magazines of the Great Depression is still used today. Many companies even offer free models in their magazines for quilting and other crafts.
