The problem with Christmas
Christmas is a mystery to most people. It's like a rich uncle octogenarian. You love him, is tremendously entertaining and provocative, which gives very good and this can give an Italian villa in his will. But it must be taken to the toilet regularly, requires much care, persists and makes absolutely crazy when taking her to a fancy cocktail, because you never know when to switch to gas or say something really outrageous, both only stronger.
On the one hand, we all have a joyful anticipation of the season – the moving and ridiculous movies and special decorations the children sing songs in the mall and all paid days off. And secondly, many of us fear and pressure rate cards Christmas shopping, crowds, and finally, (line) of the mandatory family gatherings.
This complicates the social psychosis season enough, but when added in the rhetoric of religious war of Christmas, Jesus is the reason for the season, so make them even deeper layers of guilt and anxiety. What I do?
A good starting point is to untangle the hairball various levels of the traditions and religious implications that have come to define Christmas. Like most of our modern heritage, there is more to this kaleidoscope of what it seems. Once we see things going, then maybe we can bring a little common sense and enjoy of its conclusion.
The Christmas story. In fact, we talked about the history of the Winter Solstice, which are more than 4000 years. Most of our "Christmas Traditions" were originally held rituals centuries before Christ was born. The gifts, carnivals, parades, singers go from house to house, festivals, and performance may be church dates back early Mesopotamia (1500 BC).
Persians, Babylonians, the Norse, Greeks, Romans and Egyptians had all the elaborate rituals that were held at the winter solstice, designed to pay homage to the mythological significance the sun and the cycles of perennial nature. But do not rush to dismiss the ancient traditions and pagan rituals altogether. In fact, they were very spiritually oriented.
It is true that the peoples who inhabited what is now the Middle East 3000 years before Christ were polytheists who had many gods. But they were also very religious. A large part of their culture has focused on research to know the will of the gods, and the beginning of the winter solstice traditions reflect this orientation. The Romans decorated the halls with holly and candles in tribute to one of their most powerful gods, Apollo. The Norse built large bonfires and festivities of-day as a way to help defeat his sun-god of darkness. These bonfires and feasts are the beginnings of our famous Christmas tree – the "12 days of Yuletide" It was a ceremony announcing the long term to their gods in the realm of evil.
These beautiful ceremonies and ancient traditions all tried to do what our Christian tradition Now to celebrate the modern domain of the supernatural forces of the cosmos through the underworld of man. They tried to honor their gods, and sometimes even help in the battle Ongoing darkness.
So who put Christ "in Christmas in the first place? Well, now, is interesting and not completely finished, historical detective story. His most popular by archaeologists, anthropologists and the Bible is that the pagan traditions were co-opted by the early church Christian. During the first three centuries after the death of Christ, he had prescribed no "celebration" to commemorate the birth of Christ. This was partly because nobody really knew where and when Christ was born, and partly because the great Christian feast of the crucifixion and resurrection. Some monasteries and churches their own local "birthday" celebrations at different times of year, but it was not until the mid 4th century AD, is the birth of Christ became in an official celebration, with a specific date.
Why did it happened? How do the various peoples of the Roman Empire to reject their historical religions and noisy joy of the official religion of Christianity (as decreed in 350 AD) was not easy. Reluctantly, but inevitably, the church has accepted the perennial celebration of its diverse citizens (if she was a pagan) and wisely decided to include these celebrations for their own agenda. In what many historians considered as a stroke of PR genius, in 320 AD, Pope Julius I proclaimed that the pagan celebration of the December 25 "Fiesta del Sol" (Natalis Invicti, namely "The Nativity") now celebrate the birth of Christ – ta da! Enter the official birthday of Christ.
By Advent Catholic Encyclopedia 402 AD the "Feast of the Nativity of Christ" (the new interpretation of the Nativity) was performed through the Holy Roman Empire. The cradle itself (you know, livestock, stables, etc.) have not gone through another 800 years. In 1223, St. Francis of Assisi the nursery of origin based on its interpretation of certain habits little known cleric. Around this time, the donkey that Mary rode to Bethlehem appeared as a character in the Nativity.
But since its creation, there was dissension within the church at Christmas. For centuries, many conservative religious leaders strongly condemned the festivities and criticized the approval of the traditions of sun worshipers. As Orthodox pilgrims emigrated to the Americas 1620 Christmas party and symbolism were banished. Returning to England in 1645, Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans their success in the prohibition of "pagan traditions" Christmas celebrations in England. When Charles II new to the English throne in 1660, the festival was restored, but the custom was only dispersed by the adoption of the American colonies. After the war of independence many of the English customs, including the Christmas celebration in disgrace and has not made begin to appear in the United States until 1800.
When Americans finally began to embrace Christmas as a family celebration, the old customs were unearthed. Over the next 100 years, Americans built a Christmas tradition all their own, which includes parts of many other customs, including decorating trees, sending greeting cards, Gifts and early Christian traditions and stories. In 1836, Alabama became the first U.S. state to declare Christmas a holiday, but it was not until 1907 that Oklahoma has finally joined the club and became the last state to do so. Christmas declared a holiday in the United States in 1870. The first "official" the use of Christmas decorations to attract buyers has been in a department store in New York, 1900.
What if today means? Basically, this means that historical "truth" to a relative of the observation that we have come to adopt, if we are talking about pagan or religious celebrations. These are all facts. There is little point in fighting or by friction, not more of them if you ask me.
Nobody pulled Christmas of Christ. He is always there if you wish, but has never been his private domain. What problem? The church wound pagans to begin with, and has been a successful strategy. Today, more people in the world practice the Christian tradition than ever. Is not that enough? Remember, the Romans tried to about 1000 years to make a Christmas holiday purely Christian and all I did was to divide and oppose to the millions of people for whom it means something different. Not make the mistake that Old Cromwell. Go ahead and make your way, is a beautiful tradition. But let everyone enjoy your trip.
Yes, Christmas is also about money. And for those who shake their heads in disgust of the marketing of it, kids need a reality check fast. Christmas shopping is the cycle heftiest in America. Hundreds of thousands of companies rely on for their existence. In commercial terms, health, does not exist, someone would to invent it. The money is spent around Christmas, for everything from small lights twinkley cars airline tickets and relatively new is the fuel that keeps our economy Socket A throughout the year. Forget the new houses, which are the hundreds of billions of dollars spent Christmas that keep America economically strong.
Christmas has a significant positive impact on other aspects of our culture. People are kinder and more tolerant. There have been truces and cease-fire calls in time of war for reasons of Christmas. More than half of charitable contributions collected for all organizations in the United States' role in the Christmas period. Yes, I know some that have to do with the end of fiscal relief, but also has to do with the army of the trees boilers Hello red corner, and gifts of goodwill. This is the time of year when people feel a greater sense of social consciousness and charitable organizations of this feeling of goodwill. Pity do not pony up over the years how we do at Christmas.
What is the problem with people paying more attention to each other, or with very happy to be the decoration and music? We'll cover our yards to blow up Santas and reindeer mechanics. Let our magic shows in small havens goblins and good candles and angels. Maybe if we spent more time to make contact with the child in us, we are not so interested in pollution the planet and killing people who have political or religious understanding. Who cares why we have this expanded awareness Goodwill? If it is a belief in a particular God (or gods) or simply the desire to open to the most benevolent of our nature, what difference does it? IT'S ALL MADE UP! All bringing the humanity of man to man is good, no matter where it comes from!
Now, things around the family. I know this may be a pain in the ass. But you know what? At some basic level we all aspire for a connection to our roots and our past. Is this a difficult task we put aside our fast electro-media-recovery-rate would have to pay rent – in-the-beach-condo-someone-please-know-I dependence on the very things that destroy peace and harmony in our lives? Come on, you have 364 days to others that you may be obsessed with the front and high and worry about every ounce little to put in this year. You can afford to spend a fraction of its outreach program with his oh so important online. Although all are intolerable ass-holes, so what? forgiveness and openness.
If you do not want to send Christmas cards are not. The factor will be love. In my view, someone who keeps a checklist WHO has sent Christmas cards and makes a kind of trial in this matter should take a real life. And as any pressure to buy gifts … Get Over It! It will not kill you to get your butt and think about other people's pleasure. And speaking of boots, it will not kill to stop kissing people who really want to buy gifts for corn. Buy gifts for people who want to buy and be as generous as you want to be. If you want to buy a gift not. Sometimes it may be appropriate to give some kind of gesture, but there are many things You can do anything but buy the latest electronic gadget or other. Flowers, plants, candy or fruit great job. And you can always donate to the charity of your favorite person in the other the name. Rule No. 1 is to have fun with your gift and make it personal thought. Rule No. 2 is suffering ANIMALS! (For Indeed, if the end thinking that the books make a nice Christmas gift, then I have one for you. See my book "The Regulation MEGAgiNormous.)
"Time" report. Not enough time, too busy, blah, blah, blah. Look, if you do not have enough Christmas fun time you're confused about what is important. I am sure that when you are lying on your deathbed, one of the things you will not do is "Wow, I like to spend more time in the office and less time to enjoy Christmas." There are 525.600 minutes in a year, only 1,500 spent soaking Christmas really. What are you crazy? Sure, you can fit your busy life in the 524,000 minutes more.
Christmas is too big to be limited to a single ideology. It belongs to everyone and the whole story. He has endured thousands of years, and that unites people and celebrates hope and renewal. This is an excellent time of year that gives us permission to go beyond our normal weak heart. We learn to be kind and gentle, and caring for others and make small things that help others know we care. We learn to be funny, damn! What, your life is full of pleasure that can not stand?
Stop restless by what you perceive is the problem with it. It's just stupid to make it a conflict or some kind of litmus test that only serves to divide us. Take what want to go out and leave the rest. And other ways to take advantage of them. There is something for everyone at Christmas. It's really the most wonderful time of year, only it can be. Have a Holly Jolly one!
