Should I use a patchwork model first?

I intend to start my first quilt soon, and I wondered whether it was wise or not to use a quilt block quilt patterns, or if I should just "hands" on the fly. I prefer to use a template, but I've never done this before, I wonder if it would make things easier for me if so. Any thought of more experience Quilters crazy?
